AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE AMPHORA AND LID
late 6th century b.c.
One side with Dionysus, Apollo, and Hermes, with Apollo standing in profile at center playing the kythara, the plectrum in his strumming right hand, with Hermes to his right seated on a stool, wearing a pointed cap, his caduceus in his left hand, and Dionysus to the left, seated on a stool, a fillet in his hair, holding vines in his raised left hand, Apollo wearing a black chiton, Hermes and Dionysus wearing a white chiton, each with a red and black striped himation; the other side with Theseus battling the Minotaur, the hero, clad in a short chlamys, lunging forward with his left arm hooked around the torso of his opponent, bending back the minotaur's head by gripping its snout in his right hand, the scene flanked by two maidens; with rays above the foot, a band of conjoined lotus buds above, tongue on the shoulder, a palmette chain on the neck, a quatrefoil under each handle, a grafitto on the underside of the foot; the lid with a knob finial, with a ring of rays at the base of the knob, a band of ivy along the rim
