AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE NECK-AMPHORA
assigned by beazley to the class of neck-amphorae with pictures on the shoulder
circa 525-510 b.c.
The shoulder panel on one side with eyes and nose at center, thin undulating brows above, with Dionysus seated to the left, a rhyton in his left hand, vines in his right hand, and a satyr running to the right, looking back over his shoulder; the other side similar, with Dionysus holding the stem of a kantharos in his right hand, vines in his left; a band of red and black tongue above each side, a reserve band below each panel, with a double palmette frieze on the neck, rays above the foot, a graffito on the underside of the foot

Lot Essay

This small group of "neck-amphorae with pictures on the shoulder" were included by Beazley following his list of vases by the Antimenes painter, but not all were considered by him to be by the painter or his circle.
