A ROMAN MARBLE HEAD
circa 1st century b.c.-1st century a.d.
Depicting a hero or warrior wearing an Attic-type helmet, the crest and ear volutes rendered in marble, the top of the head drilled for the attachment of additional material, perhaps in bronze, the wide face with strong features, the heavy brows and creased forehead, the wide, almond-shaped eyes with thick lids, his undulating full lips slightly parted, the corners drilled, the chin dimpled, with short curving locks of hair protruding from below the helmet rim
