A ROMAN MARBLE PORTRAIT OF A MAN
circa mid-3rd century a.d.
Depicting a gentleman of middle age, his hair a mass of tight curls, the locks along the creased forehead with chiseled detials, the eyes with heavy upper lids, the pupils drilled, the irises incised, the angled age-lines descending from the inner corners of his eyes echoed by the naso-labial folds and by lines around the corners of his small, thin-lipped mouth, with no mustache and a short beard which leaves the cheeks free, covering only the lower side of the chin and neck
