A ROMAN PARCEL GILT SILVER BOX LID
circa late 1st century b.c.-1st century a.d.
The rectangular lid fabricated from hammered sheet, adorned in very high relief with sacrificial animals and other religious implements, including the head of a bull, the horns adorned with a garland, the head of a ram with underslung horn, the head of a goat, its muzzle tied closed, a small doe, its feet tied together, above a bundle of wood, a bird overlapping a flaming torch, a vessel, an incense burner (?), a pomegranite, an archaizing draped female sculpture, a columnar object, and a rosette, all naturalistically rendered against a stippled ground, the relief areas and alternating bands on the tubular hinge gilt, with a plain, flat border, the sides folded in, the small curved handle formed of a loop of wire, square in section, with knobbed finials, the attachment loops pinned in place
