CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne. Autograph letter signed ("S.L. Clemens") to "My Dear Henry Gilsey," New York, 7 August 1894. 2 pages, small 8vo, brown ink on beige stationery of The Players Club on Gramercy Park, two slight stains on blank area of second page.
A gracious thank-you note for a pool cue: "I am very proud of that cue [Twain was a devoted billiards player], & very fond of you for giving it to me. I did not know you had done it, till three or four day's ago; & since then I have been looking out for you [at the club] to thank you; but at last I have given that up & fallen back on the pen to express myself lest you get the superstition that I haven't got any manners & ain't going to thank you at all. I do thank you, in the most cordial way..."
