"'CONRAD IS...ESSENTIALLY A DREAMER'"

"...I am glad that you liked my [story] 'Freya [of the Seven Isles,' which was collected in 'Twixt Land and Sea, published October 1912]. My great friend Perceval Gibbon [English short-story writer, the dedicatee of Victory]...could have put it all within the compass of say 7000 words. But I haven't that talent. Perhaps it's true that, as a distinguished French critic said: 'Conrad is a [sic] essentially a dreamer (reveur).' It's a fact that my subjects grow on me. But as the popular proverb says: it takes all sorts to make the world. I have communicated with Mr. Pinker [his agent] expressing my wish that you should have the refusal of the first unplaced short story I may write..."
