"WE MISSED YOU LIKE HELL AND CONSIDERED YOU A DAMNED FINE GIRL"
Hemingway writes during a stop on his motor trip with his wife Pauline to the Nordquist L-Bar-T Ranch in Montana: "Well here we are at Scottsbluff -- while it was only a little while ago we were at Franati's (encore une demi-bouteille). The odd part was that when we got to the hotel I had a fever of 102o -- Had it a couple of days -- Miss Beefie [his sister Carol] probably wrote you all the news...at Key West we missed you like hell and considered you a damned fine girl...It blew about 58 mile gale all day and blew the top off all the land and up my and Pauline's noses, so we stopped at 2 pm and drank several absinthes and start again tomorrow -- In Scott's Bluff [sic] it's the Hotel Lincoln -- But in Dalton, Georgia, it's the Goodie Goodie Barbecue Shop -- (I swear to Christ) and funnier ones that planned to remember for you but didn't...Anyway -- Don't get tabbed (you've been) but I mean don't join the movies [in Hollywood] because we'll all be over in April to fish...again..."
"Would like to write very funny letter full of splendid cracks but instead find pen (Mr. Chan speaking) wishing you a lot of luck and sending much love and wash all your fruit and sleep under mosquito bar when on big tour and send us cards saying all very well and take good care of yourself daughter because you are very valuable -- Next year we will all catch some big ones..."
