HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Green Hills of Africa. New York: Scribner's, 1935.

8o (213 x 150 mm). Illustrations by Edward Shenton. Original light green cloth (spine soiled and faded to brown, ends of spine chipped, fore-corners worn).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author in blue ink on front free endpaper: "For Adele Brockhoff with very many thanks and best wishes, Ernest Hemingway." The recipient was the longtime secretary of G.A. ("Uncle Gus") Pfeiffer, Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer's uncle and a great friend and benefactor to the couple. It was "Uncle Gus" (the dedicatee of A Farewell to Arms) who financed their African safari in 1934, which resulted in the book Green Hills of Africa (here inscribed to his devoted secretary!). In later life G.A. Pfeiffer wanted to marry Adele Brockhoff, going so far as to propose to her, but family legal obstacles prevented the marriage. Pasted to inside front cover is a Christmas card from Hemingway's second son Patrick (his mother was Pauline) and his wife Henny. Hanneman A13a.
