[WORDSWORTH, William (1770-1850) and Samuel Taylor COLERIDGE (1772-1834)]. Lyrical Ballads, With a Few Other Poems. London: J. & A. Arch, 1798.

8o (155 x 95 mm). (Title-page a trifle foxed). Contemporary tree calf (neatly rebacked, slight wear to corners and joints); quarter calf cloth case. Provenance: William B. Scott (bookplate on front pastedown); Fairfax Murray (bookplate on front pastedown); John Drinkwater (bookplate, inscription dated 1920 and notes on front free endpaper).

FIRST EDITION, second state of the title-page, with the London imprint (the first state, with the Bristol imprint, is virtually unobtainable). A landmark of English poetry; the majority of the poems are by Wordsworth, but among Coleridge's contributions is the earliest version of "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Joseph Cottle, the original Bristol publisher of Lyrical Ballads, had five hundred copies printed, but almost immediately disposed of his stock to the London publisher Arch, who had a new title-page prepared. Some thirteen copies of the Bristol first issue are known. With the errata leaf and leaf of advertisements. Grolier English 66; Healey 4; Rothschild 2604.
