2o (350 x 220 mm). Mezzotint frontispiece portrait of Wycherley after Lely (front free endpaper detached, very occasional pale spotting. Contemporary gilt-panelled and gilt-tooled speckled calf, gilt spine, red morocco shelf label, g.e. (front hinges starting and very fragile, spine and extremities a little rubbed, a few scuffs to covers); folding case. Provenance: Grinling Gibbons (1648-1720), sculptor (presentation inscription on front free endpaper: "For the worthy Dr. Gibbons from his most obliged and humble servant W. Wycherly"); Elizabeth Gibbons, one of Grinling's five daughters and executrix of his estate (inscription on front free endpaper "Ex dono Eli. Gibbons"; David and Lulu Borowitz (bookplate on front pastedown).

FIRST EDITION, first issue, with title dated 1704 before the remainder copies were issued with a new title dated 1706, without the correction slip "The End" usually found pasted over "The End of the First Volume" at the end of the book.
