When Renoir painted this work in the surrounding area of the southern French village of Cagnes-sur-Mer, he was at the height of his career and his works where fetching record prices. Renoir had discovered Cagnes-sur-Mer in the late 1880s and returned there frequently thereafter. When the present work was painted Renoir lived in a spacious rented apartment on the top floor of the local post office. Later, in 1907, he purchased the villa of 'Les Collettes' thus affirming his attachment to Cagnes and to the Mediterranean landscape.
