Lebasque came to Paris in 1885 and soon fell under the influence of the Impressionist movement. A friend of Matisse, Manguin and Rouault, he nevertheless rejected their use of violent colour and impasto, finding influence instead in Pissarro's harmonious and less flamboyant style.
The present work was executed in the le de France, most probably near Pierrefonds or Montevrain. The artist depicts his eldest daughter, Marthe and his wife cradling their newborn, Nono, an addition which would date the work to circa 1900. 'Marthe Lebasque recalled how her father would entice his children to pose for him. "Come here for a little look" he would say, and they would be caught for a short while as his swift brush conveyed their form on the canvas' (exh. cat. Lebasque 1865-1937, San Francisco, 1986, p. 38).
