Lot Essay

The poet and critic Emile Verhaeren wrote of Claus in 1901 : "His art is sure, clear and ceaselessly in search of air, light and life. It commands respect in this country as the art of a Master" (World Impressionism : The International Movement, New York, 1990, p. 261).
Kanaal in Zeeland was painted during one of the artist's visits to Zeeland (the south-western part of The Netherlands) in the mid to late 1890's. During these summers he visited Sluis, Kapelle-Biezelinge, Ellewoutsdijk, Sint Anna ter Muiden and Veere where he most likely painted the present work.

In a letter dated 19 September 1999 John de Smet states that Kanaal in Zeeland is a typical example of Claus's Zeeland productions in the summers of 1896-99.

This work will be included in the forthcoming Emile Claus catalogue raisonn being prepared by Johan De Smet.
