Lot Essay

This rare and unusually large depiction of the Holy Family's flight from Herod's persecution displays a number of characteristics in common with Spanish, Portuguese, and even Goanese ivory carving (compare, for example, the faces of the present Virgin and and the Virgin of lot 6), most notably in the heavily hooded eyes and oval faces.
