Lot Essay

Alberto Burri was the first artist to introduce fire as a new expressive technique in his work. He initially used it on wood and paper in 1955. From 1956 Burri used fire on other materials, especially plastics, whereby his work achieved a dramatic intensity that transformed insignificant and dead material into a living work of art.
"Fire is one of the fundamental elements of life, extremely dangerous and difficult to control; Burri uses the flames as a brush to evoke colour...he does not provoke destruction, as one could easily fear, fire becomes instead an expressive medium suitable to create forms." (C. Sarteanesi, La Collezione Burri, Perugia 1995, p. 28).
