A DOUCAI 'MARRIAGE' BOWL
DAOGUANG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The deep rounded sides painted to the exterior with three pairs of mandarin ducks in a lotus pond, below a frieze of dragons each chasing a flaming pearl painted in underglaze-blue, the centre of the interior similarly decorated with another pair of ducks, below a band of lanca characters below the rim (tiny enamel flake)

Lot Essay

The combination of the lotus and a pair of mandarin ducks forms the auspicious rebus, fu fu he he, which may be translated as 'harmony for the married couple', A Chinese-English Glossary and Illustrations of Antique, Woods, 1989, fig. 127.
