Lot Essay

This drawing will be reproduced in the supplement to the catalogue raisonné of Daumier, now in preparation by the Comité Honoré Daumier.

Daumier moved to Valmondois, near Paris in 1865, in the middle of a decade 'in the artist's life when his genius as a draughtsman was at its zenith' (K. E. Maison, Daumier Drawings, New York, 1960, p. 11). The present work, which remained un-recorded and unknown since its execution on 1 August 1868 until last year, is described in the catalogue of the exhibition Daumier as 'son seul dessin signé, localisé, daté' (op. cit., p. 559).
