Lot Essay

Sir Alan Bowness has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Tim Bennet was a young architect who had become a personal friend of Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth shortly before World War II. He was killed in active service in the Royal Navy on 19 April 1942. It is assumed that Hepworth was working on this piece when she heard the news and hence dedicated this artwork to her friend.
