On spreading circular bases with ovolo, surmounted by three paws supporting fluted pedestals applied with festoons with laurel below, rising to tripod stems with coin molding enclosing entwined snakes headed by ram's heads with laurel above, with fluted campana-form sockets, with removable nozzles, marked on bases, also struck with early 19th century Austrian control marks and later French import marks --12in. Lot Essay

The severely classical design of these candlesticks, with its emphasis on verticality and the contrast between the flutes and the plain polished surfaces, is based on architectural candlesticks published by Delafosse in his New Historical Iconology in 1768.
