A late 17th century German parcel-gilt tankard
with a domed and stepped circular base, a squat domed cover with a volute thumbpiece, a c-scroll handle and a cylindrical body, engraved with a central coat of arms within an oval vignette flanked by twelve roundels, each engraved with a half length portrait of an apostle and his symbol of martyrdom: S. THOMAS, S. MATTHEVS, S. IACOBUS MINOR, S. SIMON, A. IVDAS THADEUS, S. MATTHIAS, S. PETRVS, S. ANDREAS, S. JACOBUS MAIOR, S. IOHANNES, S. PHILIPPUS, and S. BARTHOLOMEUS; the cover with a central roundel, engraved with a half length portrait of the Saviour, inscribed 'SALVATOR'; the shield terminal at the base of the handle pricked 'ANNA SUREN SANDIIN?, 1693', maker's mark PA conjoined, Cleve, c.1690 - 13.5cm high, 14oz.
