These sauceboats are copies of originals of 1764 in the Royal Collection, illustrated in E. Alfred Jones, The Gold and Silver of Windsor Castle, 1911, plate LXXXII. A pair of similar sauceboats by the same maker, 1819, engraved with the crest of the Earls of Kenmare, was sold in these Rooms, April 28, 1992, lot 166; a pair of sauceboats from the same set was sold in these Rooms, October 18, 1989, lot 163, previously in the collection of Violet, Lady Beaumont and sold by Christie's, London, November 16, 1949, lot 129. A set of four of 1819 is illustrated in N.M. Penzer, Paul Storr, 1771-1844, Silversmith and Goldsmith, 1954, p. 206, and a pair of 1812 is illustrated in Morrie A. Moss, The Lillian and Morrie Moss Collection of Paul Storr Silver, 1972, p. 184. The latter was subsequently in the collection of Mrs. John W. Christner sold in these Rooms June 7, 1977, lot 82. A pair of 1821 is in the Elizabeth B. Miles Collection Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut. The same model was also used by Robert Garrard. A set of four by this maker, 1825, was sold Sotheby's, London, November 28, 1965, lot 69, and a set of four of 1818, engraved with the arms of Sneyd, was sold by Christie's in the Sneyd Heirlooms sale in 1924.
