A mid 17th-Century brass dial,
with punched letters and engraved numerals, with zodiac calendar table with legend stamped ANNO 1643, the circumference divided 1-12 (x 2) and sub-divided in fifteen-minute intervals, each sector labelled with the names of the winds and zodiac scale for MELANCHOLIVS, PHLIGMATICVS, SANGVINEVS and CHOLERICVS, with lines for length of day and night, with further zodiac calendar scale, the plate with drillings for rivets, perhaps at one time fitted with an alidade or fixed sights, now fitted with a suspension point and loop, the other side engraved with a circle divided in four quadrants and inscribed Smnia Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam and signed Balthasar Nemann, and dated 1712, further engraved with a fruiting vine, one side with an alidade, the other with a rule, uninscribed, with brass screw axis pivot and wedge -- 8.3/8in. (21.3cm.) dia.
