A finely engineered approx 1/12th scale model of Cartwright's Portable Engine (1801)
built by G.A. Dimelow with brass cylinder .15/16in. bore x 1.1/8in. stroke, drop valves in piston and cylinder top cover, rack and pinion overmounted crankshaft, crank and connecting rod to a grass hopper beam in turn connected to another crankshaft with spoked flywheel, metal bed mounted on wood and two brick piers, display base -- 11 x 8in. (29.2 x 21.5cm.)

Lot Essay

The purpose of this design was to achieve two revolutions for each complete cycle in the cylinder, and was granted a patent in 1801. As far as is known no example was ever built.

The model is built without castings or fabrication with real bricks and cement forming the piers.
