Lot Essay

This form is listed in 1756 and as Rosalind Savill suggests (op cit, p. 693), probably corresponds to the large plaster model in the Svres archives labeled "pot a l'eau deux pintes." This would appear to be correct, as the Parisian pinte at this time was equivalent to 93 centiliters or approximately one U.S. quart.

Pierre-Joseph Rosset, recorded at Vincennes and Svres as a painter of flowers, landscapes and patterns, 1753-1799

The painter's mark of the numeral 5 has traditionally been attributed to A.J. Carri or H.J. Mongenot. However, recent scholarship shows that there is little supporting evidence for these attributions, with the attribution to Mongenot the least likely.
