Lot Essay

The only other extant examples include the pair of bleu celeste egg cups noted by Tamara Praud and Antoine d'Albis as in a private collection (La Porcelaine de Vincennes, no. 237) and the white example painted with flowers in the David Collection, Copenhagen (Svend Eriksen, The David Collection, French Porcelain, Copenhagen, 1980, no. 42).
For reasons of practicality the present model was quickly abandoned for the less easily broken coquetier sans pied. The present example may be one of the eight recorded in the factory sales records as having been sold to Lazard Duvaux between 20 August 1756 and 1 January 1757 for 192 livres or 24 livres each. It may equally be the single example sold to M. Machard 26 September 1757 for the same price.

Dennis Lev, recorded at Vincennes and Svres as a painter of flowers, patterns and birds, 1754-1753 and 1795-1805
