The term, Belle Epoque, literally means 'beautiful era', and the jewelry from the first ten years of the twentieth century perfectly fits the description. It was a time of elegance, when ladies dressed in exquisite lace gowns, elaborately adorned with diamond jewelry. Jewelry was delicate, lace-like, inspired by the French styles of the 18th century. With the introduction of platinum, diamonds could dominate the design unobstructed by heavy mountings and radiate their full brilliance in the revolutionary electric lighting. This new white look, at the same time, was enhanced by pearls, that was able to soften the cool iciness of diamonds and metal.
This bracelet by the prestigious Parisian house, Lacloche Frres, epitomizes this era. Pearls form the connecting link between each panel which is decorated with a single diamond-set rose, framed by diamonds. The delicate work on each panel is formed out of millegraining, the overall effect simulating petit point. Only an exceptional jewel house could create a piece of jewelry with such superb craftsmanship. Another jeweler who used this highly effective needlepoint style was Carl Faberg and the Mosaic egg presented to the Czarina, Alexandra Feodorovna by Nicholas II is a supreme example of this highly skilled and exquisite technique.
