A VICTORIAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER-PLATED TABLE
MAKER'S MARK OF ELKINGTON & CO., CIRCA 1875

On tri-form dentilated base applied with acanthus at intervals and supporting three massive gryphons whose wings enclose a central baluster pedestal with central platform set with three fluted baluster knops and vase-shaped stem above chased with allegorical figures representing painting, music and sculpture, and flanked by openwork scrolls, the removable circular top with panels depicting months of the year and astrological signs enclosing an agricultural trophy, the top with maker's label on reverse--top 21 1/2in. (54.5cm.) diameter, overall height 31in. (79cm.), on ebonized tri-form pedestal.

Lot Essay

The dish which forms the top of this table is one of a series from a design by Leonard Morel-Ladeuil which were exhibited at the Paris International Exhibition of 1878 which were described in The Art Journal as "the work of a master hand, of an artist who has obtained the highest renown" (The Art Journal, 1879, p. 150).
