Of typical form, inlaid overall with foliate scrolls and applied with cartouche-form scrolling foliate mounts, the hinged cover lifting above a fall-front, with handles to sides, underside to top bearing a plaque with an inscription reading, This Charter Chest/which originally belonged to/Mary/Queen of Scotts/was left at Cadzon Castle/on her Majesty's departure for/the battle of Lancside/and afterwards became successively the/property of/the Earl of Man and the/Right Honorable Lord Belhaven of Wishaw/It was acquired by John Watson of Farnock and Nielsland, in December 1873, brass mounts later
