A CHINESE HARDWOOD MARBLE-TOP PIER TABLE IN THE VICTORIAN STYLE
19th century
The rectangular rose marble top set into a frame elaborately carved with a frieze of flowers and foliage centred on an openwork motif and supported at the front by two sturdy cabriole legs headed by flower medallions and acanthus leaves and terminating in flaming pearls, at the back by rectangular legs with similar relief carving, all resting on a curved plinth
33 in. (82.5cm.) high, 37 in. (95cm.) wide, 22 in. (56 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

This ornately carved rosewood table is identical to the one in the Robert Bennet Forbes House, Milton, Massachusetts, and illustrated by C.Crossman, op.cit., pl.144, p.260. The latter was made in China in imitation of an English prototype and taken to America by Captain Forbes in 1849
