Lot Essay

The border design of panels of Iznik-inspired flowers alternating with figures in landscapes around the central figural scene, illustrates the development during the second quarter of the 17th Century from the earlier typical kraak panelled borders to the Transitional style motifs. See M. Rinaldi, Kraak Porcelain, 1989, pp.112-113 for a discussion on this style of border and colour pl.110 for a similar dish which is in the Groninger Museum. Another comparable dish is in the Rijksmuseum, illustrated by C.J.A. Jrg, op.cit., 1997, p.60, no.41. Further dishes of this type and size were exhibited, 1990, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel, Porzellan aus China und Japan, Catalogue, nos.29, 30 and 31.
