The text is in classical Chinese and represents the Zuiweng tingji, 'Essay on the Pavilion of the Drunken Old Man', or part thereof, originally written by Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072), a distinguished official of the Northern Song Dynasty. The last line may be translated as: 'The winter of the Xinchou year, honourable record of the Zuiweng tingji'. The cyclical date referred to may correspond to AD 1721 during the Kangxi period, or a date during the lifetime of the author.
