Lot Essay

Compare the plate from this service in the Mottahedeh collection, illustrated by D. Howard and J. Ayers, op.cit., 1978, vol.II, no.552, where the authors suggest that the design is probably European in origin, and possibly derives from a textile pattern. The orange and gilt border is characteristic of wares made for the southern European market; this design was also much copied by Spode. A part dinner service of this design was sold in these Rooms, 11 and 12 November 1985, lots 430-441.
