Decorated in iron-red, green and aubergine enamels and gilt on underglaze blue, the interior with peony blossom, ferns and leaves emerging from an elaborate vase, the exterior with a ho-o bird within two shaped panels, minute chip and some rubbing to enamels and gilt

The shape derives from a European silver shape. Pieces for the European dinner table such as tureens and sauceboats are rare in Japanese porcelain, as unlike 18th century Chinese porcelain, there are no known full dinner services.
