by P. Gauci in Sir R.H. Schomburgk, Twelve Views in the Interior of Guiana...after sketches taken during the expedition...in...1835 to 1839, London, 1841, pl. 11.

Schomburgk was awarded the R.G.S.'s gold medal for scientific work undertaken on the expedition. As well as discovering and sending to England the Victoria Regia waterlily, Schomburgks's exploration enabled him to suggest a possible border between Venezuela and British Guiana, the so-called 'Schomburgk line'. The British government adopted his suggestions and between 1841 and 1843, as a commissioner, sent him to survey and mark out the boundary. As is made clear in the preface to Schomburgk's Twelve Views..., sketches were made under his direction by the expedition draughtsman, James Morrison, and these field sketches were then worked up in London by Bentley for publication.
