Lot Essay

The view probably derives from the African sketches taken by his younger brother Pierre during the Campagne de la Flore (1771-72) which ran along the west African coast before crossing the Atlantic. Nicolas-Marie Ozanne is known to have copied a number of his younger brother's views for his own Ports de France which published engravings after his drawings by his sister Jeanne-Franoise Ozanne. For Pierre's African sketches, see L. Duclaux, Inventaire Gnral des Dessins (Muse du Louvre, Cabinet des Dessins), Paris, 1975, XII, nos. 400-416.
