Manuscript signed entitled 'Calcutta to Java &c. and Back, with Notes on the Dutch settlements in the Malay Archipelago including Sumatra, Borneo, the "Spice Islands", and New Guinea &c &c', Co. Carlow, Ireland, 1888, including 39 commercial photographs, 22 drawings and 5 printed maps, approximately 480 pages, 4to, in 13 gatherings, with some loose leaves (lacking the preface).
A comprehensive and apparently unpublished guide to the Dutch East Indies in the 1880s. Part travel guide, part journal and part geographical description, 'Calcutta to Java and Back' appears to have been prepared with a view to publication, but there is no record of its having been printed. The text begins with 'Hints to Travellers', with particular regard to the customs of Java and the Spice Islands ('Do not be surprised if you see Ladies at meals at the Hotels, in the Public room without shoes or stockings!'), and proceeds with a genial and informative account of a tour by sea via Burma and Penang to Java, returning via Singapore to Calcutta. The final part of the work provides comprehensive information on every aspect of the history, natural history, customs and infrastructure of the Dutch possessions. The photographs, which appear to have been bought locally, depict styles of dress, views and dignitaries.
