After J. S. TEMPLETON
A View in Western Australia, taken from a hill, the intended site of a fort, on the left bank of the Swan River
lithograph, printed by Engelmann Graf, Coinde & Co., [? London, 1830]. Light spotting in the upper part of the print and at lower blank margin, central fold mark. Backed on a contemporary blue wrapper which is inscribed in pencil: 'Published with the Foreign Literary Gazette No. 12, 1830'.
S.9in. x 14in. (23.7 x 37.8cm.)
This view is said, in the caption, to have been taken 'a mile and a quarter' from the mouth of the Swan River. Garden Island is shown on the left, in the distance, and Pulo Carnac on the right: 'between the two is the only known entrance for shipping into Cockburn Sound, which lies between Garden Island and the main land.... On the right is the mouth of the Swan River. On the left, a temporary mud work, overlooking a small bay where the troops disembarked. In the foreground is a road leading to the intended fort and cantonment on the river'.
