SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922)
The Holy Bible. Oxford: University Press & London: Henry Milford, [n.d.]. 8 (17.5 x 12cm.), on India paper, coloured maps at end. (Pp. 315-16 torn with loss.) Original black leather, g.e. (upper cover detached, generally worn). SHACKLETON'S COPY, the front blank inscribed: 'Ernest H. Shackleton August 1921 From M. J. S. Numbers 6-- 24. 25. 26' (front blank almost detached and torn in blank area but without affecting the inscription).
This bible was given to Shackleton only the month before he set sail in the Quest (17 September 1921) on what was to be his final voyage. He died on South Georgia, 5 January 1922, before reaching the Antarctic. Sold as an association item, not subject to return.
