The famous 'hut', at Scott's Cape Evans base on McMurdo Sound, was a solid structure 50 feet long by 25 feet wide and 9 feet to the eaves. Diana Preston notes that 'In line with strict rules of naval discipline the hut was subdivided into the wardroom, for use by the officers and scientists, and the mess-deck for the others' (A First Rate Tragedy, p. 139.). It was erected and made ready for occupation by 18 January 1912, its comforts including a stove, cooking-range, gramophone and pianola. (2)
