Situated on Ross Island, the active cone Mount Erebus and the inactive cone Mount Terror, were first sighted on 28 January, 1841 by the expedition under the command of James Clark Ross, and were in fact named after his two ships the Erebus and Terror. Mount Erebus later became one of the most familiar of landmarks for Antarctic explorers.
