Chteau Haut-Brion--Vintage 1955
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru class. Chteau-bottled
Bin-soiled labels, some torn, one missing in lot 330. Lot 330 levels very top-shoulder. Lot 331 one damaged capsule. Levels top-shoulder. Lot 332 levels: two top, six upper and four mid/upper-shoulder
Tasting note: Never very deep, yet rich, ruby-centred. The nose is consistently earthy, with lovely, ripe, soft and gentle progressions. Haut-Brion is always the odd-man-out, quite different in taste from the first-growth Mdocs: earthy, tobacco, sometimes charred, bracken-like or tarry, but - since the last war - consistently well made and elegant. A fine wine but a bit more austere than its peers. M.B.
