The case by Nicolas-Jean Marchand, the movement by Jean-Philippe Delorme
Profusely inlaid overall with scrolling foliage the circular dial with enamelled Roman and Arabic cartouche chapters inscribed 'DE LORME A PARIS', blued steel hands, the twin barrel movement with later anchor escapement and countwheel strike on a bell (now lacking the hammer), the backplate signed DeLorme AParis, with glazed door mounted to the lower edge with the reclining figure of Flora borne on a lion and beside a globe, the arched case with glazed panels to each side and surmounted by a shaped block with entwined serpents at the angles and further mounted with a figure of Flora atop a flower and acanthus-wreathed rocaille dome, the lower edge mounted with scrolling acanthus and rocaille, on conforming wedge feet, the back door stamped 'MARCHAND' and 'JME', the mounts regilt and possibly partially replaced

Lot Essay

Nicolas-Jean Marchand, matre circa 1735.

Jean-Philippe Delorme is recorded as a clockmaker circa 1736-40.

Marchand was established in rue Saint-Nicolas. He mainly produced good quality ormolu-mounted lacquer commodes as well as clock-cases.

The bas-relief celebrates the Season of Spring and the Element of Air, with the festive deity Flora courted by the wind deity Zephyr while flowering a wind-puffed sphere.
