The shaped rectangular top with gilt-tooled red leather writing-surface and stepped moulded border above one long frieze drawer flanked by two short drawers with scrolled foliate mounts, the reverse with simulated drawers, the plain sides above cabriole legs headed by foliate pierced scrolled mounts and terminating in scrolled sabots, the right rail stamped 'P. ROUSSEL' and 'JME', partly remounted, restorations

Lot Essay

Pierre Roussel, matre in 1745.

A prolific bniste, Pierre Roussel, was established at rue de Charenton, under the effigy of 'L'Image de Saint Pierre'. He was described in the 1769 Almanach de Vray Mrite as 'un des premiers bnistes de Paris'. A bureau plat of similar shape and stamped Roussel was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 14 December 1995, lot 83.
