Lot Essay

This spectacular Venetian commode combines relief-carved polychrome decoration and parcel-gilt details with floral japanned lacquer-decorated surfaces to give a remarkably rich effect. A virtually identical commode, evidently from the same workshop, but with cupboard doors instead of a drawer, is illustrated in G. Morrazoni, Il Mobile Veneziano del Settecento, Milan, 1958, colour plate XIV. Similar raised floral decoration with palm fronds features on a commodino in Ca' Rezzonico, Venice (illustrated in G. Mariacher, Ca' Rezzonico, Venice, 1967, fig. 46).
