With World time, of circular domed form with six female caryatids flanking a obelisk and supporting two engraved dials, the upper with Arabic divisions, the lower with the cities of the world, below individual circular Arabic chapters and a pierced dome with berried finial, on a circular base with bun feet, with glass dome, the French bridgecock verge watch movement signed 'Lpine a Paris', with patent plaque 'Brevet d'Invention', with modern winder
19 in. (48.5 cm.) high; 9 in. (23.5 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A griffin-supported and sphere-capped Egyptian obelisk, emblematic of Eternity, is inscribed with the name 'Brevet d'Invention' and is displayed in a domed rotunda supported by vestal caryatids. The caryatid also features on a Louis XVI clock with revolving dials (illustrated in Tardy, French Clocks The World Over, Part II, Paris, 5th ed., 1981, p. 193, fig. XXIII).
