Lot Essay

The vendor acquired this sword from one of the Prop men working on the film. According to him, this sword was one of three made for use by Richard Gere as Lancelot. In the opening scene of the film Lancelot is earning a living by challenging others to swordfights, at least two changes of sword occur in this sequence. An identical sword with the distinctive celtic design on the blade, can be seen towards the end of the fight sequence before the titles appear. The pommel was apparently changed for practice purposes from the original pommel seen in the film because Richard Gere had hurt his wrist in a fall from a horse during filming, and the original pommel irritated his injury. We understand the blades on these swords were also frequently changed because they dented easily.
