Lot Essay

In May 1892 Repin bought an estate in Zdravnevo, Vitebsk Province, with the money he received from Alexander III for the large canvas of 'The Zaporozhtsy write a letter to the Turkish Sultan'. During the summer he painted various portraits and 'Sunrise over the Dvina'.
