Lot Essay

The artist accompanied D.V. Dashkov on a journey to the Middle East leaving St. Petersburg on 18 March 1820. On their journey in Palestine they met the armies of Sheik Abu-Gosh, who would gather the gifts of the pilgrims and invite them to dinner. G.V. Smirnov's 'Maksim Nikiforovich Vorob'ev 1787-1855' in Russian Art: Studies on the Life and Work of Artist of First Half of the 19th Century edited by A.I. Leonov (Moscow: 1954) p.328 records that the artist painted this break in their journey, 'Evening with Abu-Gosh', which was exhibited in 1827.
