The bard relates the Lay of the Host of Igor, in which the Grand Prince of Kiev Igor Sviatoslavovich went into battle against his Polovtsian enemies in 1185. Stelletskii is recorded to have drawn as series of illustrations to this greatest, but also most puzzling work of mediaeval Russian literature, in 218 verses. The illustrations clearly interpret the content of the poem by reproducing the earlier old Russian style.
